The engine brake (also exhaust brake or decompression brake) is a safety feature that significantly improves the braking performance of standard tractors on downhill gradients. It uses engine resistance to decelerate the vehicle, relieving the service brakes. During heavy transport runs downhill – for example with a full trailer – the engine brake can mean the difference between safe braking and overheated brakes. Is the braking effect noticeable? Are there unusual noises? Tractors with an engine brake and air brakes together offer the highest safety level for heavy transport. The engine brake reduces service brake wear by up to 50 percent and significantly extends the life of brake pads and discs.
The engine brake creates a braking effect by restricting the engine exhaust flow through a flap in the exhaust system. This creates back pressure in the cylinders that slows the engine and thereby the vehicle. Some systems also cut fuel injection and activate decompression. The braking effect on modern tractors corresponds to approximately 60 to 80 percent of engine power.
An engine brake is particularly useful for regular downhill travel with trailers, transport in hilly terrain, high transport speeds on roads with gradients, and heavy loads. In mountain regions like the Alps or hill country, the engine brake is an important safety feature that prevents brake failure through overheating.
Retrofitting an engine brake is possible on some tractors but requires installing an exhaust flap and connecting to the engine management system. Costs range from 1,000 to 3,000 euros. For tractors with modern exhaust aftertreatment, the retrofit may be more complex. Consult an authorised workshop to determine suitability for your model.
