The creeper gear (also creeper group or crawler gear) enables tractors to travel at extremely low speeds, sometimes below 0.5 km/h. This additional reduction is fitted before the main gearbox on standard tractors and further reduces travel speed significantly. This is particularly important for specialist operations such as vegetable planting, laying mulch film, crop protection in row cultures or operating winches in forestry. On Landwirt.com, you can filter specifically for tractors with creeper gear. With modern CVT (continuously variable) transmissions, travel speed can be finely dosed without a creeper gear, but for powershift transmissions, a creeper group is often indispensable for certain applications.
Use the property search on Landwirt.com to find tractors with creeper gear. Farms in vegetable growing, viticulture, orchards or forestry particularly benefit from this equipment. When buying a used tractor, test the creeper gear for smooth function: does it engage and disengage easily? Does the tractor run evenly at the lowest speed? Are there unusual noises from the gearbox? Tractors with creeper gear and powershuttle offer a particularly convenient combination for loading and manoeuvring work. Note that the creeper group is optional with some manufacturers and not always factory-fitted.
The creeper gear is needed wherever extremely low travel speeds are required. Typical applications include: vegetable planting and film laying (0.3-1 km/h), crop protection in row cultures, winch work in forestry, driving concrete mixers and pumps via PTO while stationary, and precise loading operations in livestock buildings. Without a creeper gear, the driver would have to constantly slip the clutch, causing rapid wear.
CVT transmissions (continuously variable) such as the Vario from Fendt or AutoCommand from New Holland can regulate speed steplessly down to near zero. However, controllability at extremely low speeds (below 0.5 km/h) may be limited on some CVT gearboxes. An additional creeper gear can therefore be useful even with CVT transmissions when working regularly at walking speed.
Retrofitting a creeper gear is possible on some tractor models but requires modifications to the gearbox. Manufacturers like ZF offer retrofit kits for certain gearbox series. Costs range from 2,000 to 5,000 euros including installation. Alternatively, external reduction gearboxes on the PTO or front hitch can be used.
