AdBlue is an aqueous urea solution used in modern tractors with SCR catalytic converters (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for exhaust gas aftertreatment. The technology reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 90 percent and has been fitted to many standard tractors since the introduction of emission stage IV (Tier 4). AdBlue consumption typically amounts to approximately 3 to 5 percent of diesel consumption. On Landwirt.com, you can specifically filter for tractors with AdBlue – this is particularly important as operating costs and maintenance requirements can differ significantly depending on the emission technology. Manufacturers such as John Deere, New Holland, Deutz-Fahr and Fendt use AdBlue systems across their current model ranges.
When purchasing a used tractor with AdBlue on Landwirt.com, there are several points to consider. Use the property filter to specifically find models with SCR technology. An important aspect with used machines is the condition of the AdBlue system: check the SCR catalytic converter, the injection nozzle and the AdBlue tank for proper function. Blocked or defective components can result in expensive repairs. At the same time, tractors with AdBlue often benefit from lower diesel consumption as the engines operate more efficiently. Tractors with cab suspension and modern exhaust systems offer the highest comfort and environmental standards for daily use.
When the AdBlue tank is empty, most tractors will progressively reduce engine power. Modern machines first display a warning before throttling power to approximately 60 percent or preventing a restart when the tank is completely empty. It is therefore important to regularly check the AdBlue level and refill in time. AdBlue is available at many fuel stations and agricultural supply stores.
The AdBlue consumption of tractors averages 3 to 5 percent of diesel consumption. For a tractor consuming 10 litres of diesel per hour, approximately 0.3 to 0.5 litres of AdBlue per hour are needed. The exact consumption depends on engine load, manufacturer and specific model. The additional cost of AdBlue is partly offset by the lower diesel consumption of SCR engines.
No, a tractor with an AdBlue system cannot and must not be operated permanently without AdBlue. Disabling or bypassing the SCR system is illegal and can result in substantial fines. You also risk losing the operating licence and warranty claims. If the AdBlue system develops problems, have it inspected and repaired by an authorised specialist workshop.
