What are the main types of goat farming?

Goat farming broadly divides into three main sectors: dairy, meat and fibre production. Dairy goat farming focuses on breeds like Saanen, Alpine and Toggenburg for milk and cheese production. Meat goat farming uses breeds like Boer and Kalahari Red for fast-growing, muscular animals. Fibre production centres on Cashmere and Angora goats for their valuable wool and hair. Many smallholders also keep dual-purpose or heritage breeds that combine moderate milk and meat production with hardiness and self-sufficiency.

Which goat breed produces the most milk?

The Saanen goat is the highest-yielding dairy breed, with top animals producing over 1,000 litres of milk per lactation. Alpine and Toggenburg goats also deliver strong milk yields, typically 700 to 900 litres per year. For cheese production, the Nubian goat is favoured for its milk’s high butterfat content, which produces richer, creamier cheese. The best dairy breed for your farm depends on your climate, management system and market for goat milk products.

Can I keep goats with other livestock?

Yes, goats can be kept successfully alongside other livestock. They are commonly grazed with sheep, which improves pasture utilisation as the two species prefer different plants. Goats can also be kept with cattle, horses and donkeys. When mixing species, ensure adequate feed and water access for all animals, provide species-appropriate shelter and be aware of any cross-species health risks. Goats are social animals and benefit from the company of other goats within a mixed herd.
