Donkeys – Versatile and Charming Farm Animals

Donkeys are intelligent, hardy and endearing animals that have served humans for thousands of years. On Landwirt.com you can find donkeys for sale from breeders, private owners and farming families across Europe. Whether you are looking for a companion animal, a pack donkey for hiking, a grazing partner for horses or a guardian animal for your flock, our marketplace connects you with sellers who raise healthy, well-handled donkeys.

Our donkey listings include standard-sized donkeys, miniature donkeys, large breeds such as Poitou and Catalan donkeys, and crossbreeds. Donkeys are increasingly popular as companion animals for horses, as their calm presence has a soothing effect on equine companions. They are also valued as livestock guardians, particularly for sheep and goats, where their natural alertness and protective instincts help deter foxes and stray dogs. For families and hobby farmers, miniature donkeys make delightful and low-maintenance pets.

Each listing on Landwirt.com includes details about the donkey’s breed, age, sex, height, temperament and price. Donkeys are social animals that should always be kept with at least one companion, so plan to acquire two or keep them with other equines. Browse our listings to find the right donkey for your farm, family or herd protection needs.

Are donkeys good livestock guardians?

Yes, donkeys are effective and popular livestock guardians, particularly for sheep and goat flocks. Their natural alertness, loud braying and willingness to confront predators such as foxes and stray dogs make them a reliable deterrent. A single standard-sized donkey can protect a flock of up to 50 sheep or goats. Geldings and jennies are preferred as guardians, while jacks can be too aggressive. The donkey should be bonded with the flock from a young age for best results.

How much space does a donkey need?

Donkeys need a minimum of approximately 0.2 hectares of pasture per animal, with additional space for exercise and grazing rotation. They require a dry, draught-free shelter where they can escape rain, as donkeys are more susceptible to wet conditions than horses due to their desert origins. Donkeys are social animals and must be kept in pairs or groups, so plan for enough space to accommodate at least two animals comfortably with room to move freely.

What do donkeys eat?

Donkeys are efficient foragers that thrive on a diet of primarily straw and coarse hay, supplemented with limited amounts of grass. Unlike horses, donkeys are prone to obesity and laminitis if overfed, so rich pasture and concentrates should be limited or avoided. Provide a mineral lick and access to fresh, clean water at all times. Avoid feeding treats high in sugar. Consult with a veterinarian or equine nutritionist to establish the right feeding plan based on the donkey’s size, age and activity level.
