This transmission was mounted on an old front mower so that it could be used at the rear of a tractor without front hydraulics, i.e., driven by the rear PTO at 540 rpm and converted by the gearbox to 1,000 rpm and in the opposite direction of rotation. Of course, it also works the other way around. Equipment that is typically mounted and driven from the rear can then be driven by the front PTO.
