Durch Kalkung wird ein besseres Porenvolumen erreicht, welches sich auch auf die Durchwurzelung und die Bodendurchl\u00fcftung sowie den Gasaustausch im Boden positiv auswirkt. Bodenlebewesen wie Regenw\u00fcrmer, Bakterien, Milben usw. finden im neutralen bis leicht sauren pH-Bereich optimale Lebensbedingungen. Dort zersetzen diese die organische Substanz und bauen wertvollen Dauerhumus auf. Dadurch werden S\u00e4uren im Boden, die durch nat\u00fcrliche Prozesse (Ernte, Wurzelatmung, Niederschl\u00e4ge usw.) entstehen, neutralisiert. Die Verf\u00fcgbarkeit von N\u00e4hrstoffen im Boden h\u00e4ngt ganz wesentlich vom pH-Wert ab. \u00a0Das zeigt die Abbildung 1 sehr deutlich. Pflanzenwurzeln k\u00f6nnen N\u00e4hrstoffe nur in gel\u00f6ster Form aufnehmen. Ein Gro\u00dfteil der Pflanzenn\u00e4hrstoffe ist im Bereich von pH 6,0 bis 7,5 f\u00fcr Pflanzen verf\u00fcgbar. Steigende pH-Werte erh\u00f6hen auch die Verf\u00fcgbarkeiten von Stickstoff, Kalium, Schwefel, Kalzium, Magnesium und Molybd\u00e4n. Insbesondere die Verf\u00fcgbarkeit von Phosphor reagiert sehr stark auf niedrige pH-Werte. Unter pH 6,0 nimmt die Phosphorverf\u00fcgbarkeit stark ab. Viele Praxisversuche belegen, dass durch eine Kalkung die Verf\u00fcgbarkeit von Phosphor um bis zu 100 % gesteigert werden kann. In Anbetracht der zuletzt massiv gestiegenen Preise f\u00fcr Minerald\u00fcnger ist eine Kalkd\u00fcngung eine sehr preiswerte Alternative um N\u00e4hrstoffe im Boden zu mobilisieren und den Pflanzen Entscheidend ist die Tragf\u00e4higkeit des Bodens. In der Regel werden auf leichten Acker- und Gr\u00fcnlandb\u00f6den bzw. im Wald kohlensaure Kalke eingesetzt. Branntkalke werden vor allem auf schweren Ackerb\u00f6den, die pH-Werte von 6,5 und mehr ben\u00f6tigen, eingesetzt. Mehlfeine, trockene Kalke werden mit Schneckenstreuern ausgebracht. Durch die bodennahe Ausbringung soll einer Staubentwicklung entgegengewirkt werden. Bei der Ausbringung von Feuchtkalken werden spezielle Tellerstreuer eingesetzt.
